Dear Readers, We would like to apologize for having not posted the past several months. It has been a very busy time for us, most of us taking new jobs or going back to school, and learning how to use the excellent new upgrades that were made to the website by Development Seed.
Switzerland has been holding US 6.2 million dollars in accounts that were established by Jean Claude "Baby Doc" Duvalier. Since his exile in 1986, he has been living quite cozily in France though it has been said his ex-wife, made off with most of the funds.
Haiti is a tough place to be a kid. The infant mortality rate for 2005 (73.45 deaths/live births/per year) places it at 33rd highest out of 226 contenders. Though Haiti has made progress against HIV/AIDS, far too many young lives are lost to diarreah, respiratory infections, malaria and other conditions which can be prevented and treated.
Apologies to Port au Prince residents, but the capital city is an impediment to development for the country. Port au Prince became the problem city of Haiti during the reign of the Duvaliers – each of whom centralized power and authority in the Capital, disempowering secondary cities such as Cap Haitian and Jacmel.
Over the course of the next two weeks, you will notice significant improvements to the Haiti Innovation Website.
