Kick Out Illiteracy on La Gonave

Packer Soccer Camp will try to kick out illiteracy on the Island of La Gonave, Haiti this summer.
“Kicks for the Fun of It” has been the motto of the Packer Soccer camp for over 28 years. Over the years it has been more than just a phrase to its campers, coaches and staff. It has signified a way of life; a community of learners, ethics and sportsmanship, and the development of leadership on and off the soccer pitch.
This year the camp’s director and founder, Richard Packer, decided to share the values of the Packer Soccer Camp with the children of La Gonave, an impoverished rural island off the coast of Haiti. Coach Packer is hosting a special camp during the week of August 14-18 to raise funds for the non-profit organization La Lumière de Demain (“Haiti’s Light for Tomorrow”) so that it can continue its work with children who can not afford an education.
All the proceeds from the camp will go toward the efforts of HLD, a 501(c)3 not-for-profit, non-governmental organization committed to eradicating illiteracy in Haiti. Over the past 7 years, HLD has been a critical partner of the people of this remote island in promoting educational opportunities for its boys and girls. To date, more than 2,500 children who would otherwise be lost to the illiteracy and despair that have engulfed Haiti over the years are now going to school with all the textbooks they need.
“I am extremely encouraged about the progress we made over the past 7 years in getting so many children to school. The positive impact the program has had on the children, the island, and eventually Haiti itself is immeasurable”, Said Louis Elneus, president and founder of HLD, who is a native of the La Gonave and has been a Packer Camp Soccer coach for many years.
The goal of the Packer Soccer camp is to recruit 75 to 100 players, boys and girls ages 6 to 12. The camp will be hosted at Rowayton Elementary School, Rowayton from August 14-18. There will be surprise guest appearances by internationally renowned players. Registration is open.

Elneus will be making the rounds in Rowayton, Darien, New Canaan, Westport, Noroton, Stamford, Greenwich and Norwalk to recruit players to the camp.

About the Director:
Dick Packer started playing soccer when he was six years old, then through grade school, prep school, college and the pros. While attending Penn State University, he set a still-standing record of 24 goals in one season. He also led that club to two NCAA championships and was named an All-American both seasons. Dick has been a member of the U. S. Olympic Soccer team and the U. S. Armed Forces European Soccer team. He is involved in youth soccer programs in Connecticut. Dick lives in Rowayton, Connecticut, and is Regional Vice President of McGettigan World Class, an international meeting and incentive travel company.
